Abstract:

When most people hear the word electrochemistry, they think of batteries, fuel cells, or water electrolysis. Yet electricity can also serve as a powerful tool for understanding chemistry itself, providing direct access to reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, and molecular organization at interfaces. Some of the most important questions in catalysis, biology, and soft matter can therefore be approached through an electrochemical lens.

In this talk, I will discuss our efforts to use electrochemistry not only to drive chemical reactions, but also to measure and understand them. I will begin by examining the limitations of traditional Tafel analysis for fast electrocatalytic reactions, where mass transport and interfacial effects can obscure intrinsic kinetics. I will then present our recent discovery that spontaneous current fluctuations at equilibrium contain direct information about electrocatalytic activity, enabling catalyst screening and kinetic measurements from electrochemical noise alone.
